Zen Paws - Who Is Responsible?

Almost 4 years ago I saw an ad on Craig’s list for a litter of puppies.

I went out to meet the dogs on a Sunday knowing that I was not coming home with a puppy that day. It’s a big decision and I wanted to evaluate the pups and make an informed decision.

I went back that Wednesday to make my final decision. The first pup I had been attracted to was Fuzzy, but I immediately dismissed her. She was WAY too much like my Dalmatian who had died 8 months before at the age of 16 years.

She was as dominant as the day was long. Not that there is anything wrong with that, a dominant dog just takes more work than a dog with a submissive personality and I was looking for easy.

I wound up picking the puppy who had been named Eight. (He was born eighth of eight.) I renamed him Said the first day when I realized Arabic music was the best way to calm him down. Plus the name Said means gratitude and happiness and I always thought that would be a great name for a dog.

Fuzzy found a home as well but oddly enough I saw her on Craig’s list 3 or 4 weeks later. There was a picture of her tied on a chain dangerously close to a swimming pool.

I called at once and spoke with the new owner of Fuzzy, reminding her that we had all agreed when adopting the pups that if it didn’t work out we would give them back to the original owner. She didn’t care. She wasn’t giving the puppy back. She also wasn’t giving Fuzzy to me.

I called as many people as I knew to have them call and reply to her ad in an attempt to get Fuzzy and sure enough I had her in my possession by the next day. Boy was she a different dog from the dog I had met almost a month ago.

There was nothing dominant about her now. The woman who had adopted and mistreated her gleefully told a story of how Fuzzy had gone missing for almost a half an hour and finally they found her on the end of her chain paddling for dear life in the pool! We got her just in time!

In her first days she was even afraid of her brother Said. As you can see from the video below, she got over that quickly. Said knows how to win friends and influence dogs.

Stay tuned for Fuzzy’s future adventures in my next article. Spoiler: If you read my articles you’ll know I only have one dog. I’ll tell you why in my next article. Spoiler 2: Fuzzy gets a great new life.
