Frugal Living - The Makeup of a Coupon

Like many women who "put their faces on" each morning to greet the day-- so too does a coupon have the makeup required to maximize its potential. In taking notice of their attributes, coupons can help attract a pretty savings!

The foundation of a coupon begins with its type, be it a manufacturer or a store coupon. The coupon type is usually visible along the top "forehead" of the coupon. A manufacturer coupon (from the company that produces a product) can be used at any store that accepts coupons. Retailers who collect these coupons will be reimbursed by that specific manufacturer. A store coupon must be redeemed at the retailer listed at the top of the coupon, unless that store accepts one of their competing store’s coupons, drawing rival customers in. When stores accept competitor coupons, it provides a smoother application in the money saving process.

Moving down across the face towards the eye of the coupon, observe the brow raising descriptions on the coupon. Notice the subtle detailing regarding the product you’ll be allowed to redeem as it should outline the exact variety, size and quantity, as well as any limits and restrictions you’ll need to follow when making a purchase. The picture alone (which shadows the wording on the coupon) may not illustrate all of these things, but can provide brand recognition or serve as a guide as to some of the "shades" of product choices available.

Brushing along the cheeks of the next contour of the coupon is the expiration date. Though many seek after the fountain of youth, age is inevitable. And so to is the end of the life of a coupon. There is no need to blush and make a fuss- just sweep over coupons that have gone past their saving prime and move on to the next money saving find.

Now for the kisser— the part of a coupon that will bring a glossy smile to your lips—is its face value. Take notice of the plump monetary amount you can save. Also seek out the beauty of coupon doubling—it’s "the balm!" Find a store that will automatically take a $.40 off coupon, for example, and deduct $.80 off of your total, doubling your savings. Review a store’s sales ad, website, or see their customer service department for an overview of their coupon policies. When you’ve got your coupon game face on, you’ll be ready to lock in some great deals.

Finally, the barcode-- it’s like the powder that presses everything into place, helping it all blend together. Blotted on to each coupon is a specialized UPC code that allows coupons to be scanned and redeemed. Each number represents a series of enhanced security codes that identify the manufacturer, the product family type and the coupon value, giving it the perfect operational finish, ready for a night on the town!

So, there you have it—a beautiful, blemish-free reveal of the makeup of a coupon. Stay tuned for the next issue as we take a look at some top tips for coupon saving success!
